embedded in hawker culture meant that cooking was not a priority, and later, marriage to a partner who found deep fulfillment there, along with the assistance of a domestic helper, further removed me from direct engagement. For decades, the kitchen was respected but distant — acknowledged for its importance, yet untouched by my own labor.

It was only upon emigrating to the United States eight years ago that my relationship with the kitchen began to shift dramatically. No longer surrounded by Singapore's familiar conveniences, and without established support, I was compelled to enter the kitchen as an active participant — a space that, while initially private, held the potential for shared nourishment.

Thanks for reading The Open Intellectual Kitchen! What the Kitchen Demands

The kitchen, I came to understand, is not a stage for displays of perfection, nor a transactional space for utilitarian sustenance.

It is a crucible of discipline.
Humility is essential.
Consistency is key.
Creativity flourishes here.

Beyond these abstract demands, the kitchen also requires daily contact with raw materials. It demands the acceptance of imperfection, adaptation through failure, and devotion to nourishment rather than conquest.

III. What the Kitchen Is Not

In choosing the kitchen as the central metaphor for this body of intellectual experiments, I was deliberate in what I was rejecting.

The kitchen is not a sports pitch.
Life is not a tournament of winners and losers.

The kitchen is not a battlefield.
Life is not properly lived as conquest and domination.

The kitchen is not a boardroom.
Life’s deepest meaning cannot be captured through profit and loss.

Nor is the kitchen a sterile laboratory — a space focused solely on detached analysis, lacking the messiness and sensory engagement of creation —
nor a passive classroom or a leisurely garden stroll.

Each of these alternative metaphors emphasizes either competition, manipulation, passive consumption, or strategic self-advancement.

The kitchen demands something else entirely.

IV. The Meaning of "Open" and "Intellectual"

The choice of "Open" in the Open Intellectual Kitchen reflects a commitment to transparency of thought, the humility to expose work-in-progress, and the discipline to continually refine one’s understanding through engagement rather than concealment.

The choice of "Intellectual" is not an appeal to academic elitism, but an invocation of the older spirit of the intellectual life — a life devoted to serious inquiry, honest examination, and meaningful contribution.
Here, thought is not an abstract accumulation of theories; it is an art of living — tested daily, adjusted rigorously, refined humbly.

Therefore, the kitchen represents the lived terrain where these inquiries must be practiced, not merely contemplated.
It is the physical manifestation of the philosophical spirit:
to gather materials,
to labor sincerely,
to endure mistakes,
and to pursue an offering that, while imperfect, is sincerely nourishing.

V. The Purpose: Nourishment, Not Conquest

The objective is more fundamental:

To prepare thoughtful, honest, nourishing meals — intellectual and otherwise — to share them with those I love.

To create moments of authentic connection.

To leave behind not monuments to ego, but memories of meaning.

The end aim of this endeavor is not personal aggrandizement.
It is not to win awards, secure titles, or achieve mastery for its own sake.

Some meals will fail.
Some experiments will collapse.

But all will be conducted within the spirit of sincere craftsmanship, disciplined inquiry, and enduring service.

This record, and those that follow, will constitute a living archive of these experiments: a testament to the belief that the intellectual life, properly lived, must ultimately converge with the kitchen — where thought, action, humility, and nourishment meet.

VI. Closing

The stove is lit.
The first preparations are complete.
The discipline begins.

This is not a sprint, but a discipline measured in seasons.

Thanks for reading The Open Intellectual Kitchen! It's a compelling story, the myth of the perpetual climb. Yet, the humbling realities of fatherhood and the quiet insights gained during two reflective sabbaticals gradually revealed a different potential shape to life—not strictly linear, but perhaps possessing deep cyclical patterns and even moments of elegant symmetry.

Introducing the Edges & Middles Framework

From this intersection of lived experience and introspection, an intellectual framework emerged, one I call Edges & Middles. Think of it less as rigid doctrine and more as a flexible intellectual tool or lens. Its core function is to help us recognize and navigate distinct life phases: acknowledging the tender dependencies that often bookend our lives (the Edges) and honoring the vibrant phases of agency and contribution typically found between them (the Middles). I offer this not as a final decree, but as a working model—open to collective examination and refinement.

Visualizing the Framework: One Shape Among Many

To initially grasp the flow through these stages, visualizing life's progression can be helpful. One way to picture this is as an arc segmented symmetrically:

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" (Approx. 0–10): Foundational years of receiving care and forming self.

M1: Exploration & Identity Forging (Approx. 11–30): Developing independence, searching, and venturing forth.

M2: Consolidation & Expansion (Approx. 31–50): Deepening commitments, peak contribution, and exercising agency.

M3: Stewardship & Legacy Weaving (Approx. 51–70): Mentorship, sharing wisdom, synthesizing life's lessons.

E2: Managed Dependency & Reflection (Approx. 71–80+): Return to needing support, ideally with reflection and grace.

Beyond Symmetry: Embracing Life's Multiple Shapes

While a symmetrical arc offers initial clarity and highlights the contrast with linear models, life’s complexity invites richer metaphors. It's crucial to recognize this visualization as but one lens through which to view the progression through the E&M stages. The underlying framework—identifying these distinct phases of dependency and agency—is the core intellectual tool. The visual representation can, and perhaps should, be more fluid.

Other powerful metaphors can illuminate different facets of the journey:

The Spiral: Pictures life revisiting core themes (dependency, identity, contribution) on deeper levels, with accumulated wisdom—emphasizing growth within recurrence.

The Seasons: Frames the stages (Spring E1/M1, Summer M1/M2, Autumn M3, Winter E2) with distinct qualities, energies, and purposes—highlighting natural cycles.

The Branching Tree: Emphasizes individuality, choice, and path dependency—showing how life unfolds uniquely from a common trunk (E1) through various branches (M1–M3) to a mature form (E2).

The key insight here is the framework's adaptability. There isn’t a single "right" way to visualize the E&M stages. The most useful metaphor may depend on the individual using the tool, their current life context, or the specific aspect of the journey they wish to explore. The skill lies in applying the core E&M concepts flexibly, choosing the visualization that offers the deepest insight at that moment.

Understanding the E&M Pattern: Edges and Middles

Yet across metaphors, the core E&M pattern holds: Edges are often marked by greater dependence (though qualitatively different at the start and end), while Middles are defined by developing and exercising agency. Recognizing this underlying pattern—however visualized—offers a powerful shift. It allows conscious preparation, particularly for the later Edge (E2), potentially transforming it from a feared decline into a phase navigated with foresight, dignity, and grace.

Personal Resonance & Experiences

For me, the power of these concepts emerges not from theory, but from lived experience. Witnessing my children navigate E1's total reliance brought the potential needs of E2 into compassionate focus. My sabbaticals—deliberate pauses from M2’s demands—cracked open the limits of the linear career narrative, revealing the value of holistic integration. Observing elders grapple with E2 underscored the need for proactive planning. And seeing my children blossom toward their own M1 highlighted the vital role of M3 stewardship. These experiences didn’t just confirm the stages; they breathed life into them.

Practical Implications & Actionable Insights

Using the E&M framework—visualized in whatever way feels most authentic—can reshape perspective, easing the anxiety of the "never enough" culture and fostering cross-generational empathy. Consider these points:

Personal Mapping: Where are you within the E&M stages? How does recognizing this phase—perhaps using a spiral, seasonal, or tree lens—reframe your current situation?

Proactive Navigation: How can conscious planning in the Middles enrich the experience of the Edges, especially E2, regardless of the metaphor used?

Empathy Across Stages: Does this framework deepen your compassion for those in different phases, recognizing their unique position in the life cycle?

Framework Refinement: How do your experiences challenge or enrich the core concepts of E&M? How might you choose to visualize these stages?

An Invitation to Dialogue & Shared Exploration

The Edges & Middles Framework is presented here as a starting point—an adaptable compass offered for personal inquiry and collective refinement. It’s an ongoing exploration into life’s rhythms and shapes.

I warmly invite you into this conversation. Share your insights, critiques, and experiences in the comments below. How do these stages resonate with you? Which metaphors—symmetry, spiral, seasons, tree, or perhaps another—help you visualize your own journey through them?

Together, we can not only refine this framework but co-create a richer understanding of the evolving rhythms of human life.
Your voice matters. Let’s explore, reflect, and evolve this way of seeing—together.

— Amit Malhotra

Information Networks - Inspired by Yuval Noah Harari’s Nexus, I’ve come to see the value of regularly taking inventory of these networks — assessing which ones truly help us meet our life goals and consciously choosing where to invest our time and energy. Viewing our connections as part of a broader "information network" — encompassing culture, religion, education, and professional affiliations — provides a holistic perspective, much like a lens that focuses on what truly matters while filtering out distractions.

What is an Information Network?

An information network is a collection of individuals or groups bound by shared beliefs, values, knowledge, or data. These networks shape our perceptions, influence our decisions, and define our social connections.

Types of Information Networks:

Inherited Networks: These are the cultural, familial, societal, and religious networks we are born into.

Chosen Networks: These include professional, educational, political, digital, and friendship networks that we actively choose to join.

Key Attributes of Information Networks:

Shared Beliefs and Values: Ideologies or frameworks that connect members.

Communication Channels: Means by which information is exchanged (e.g., social media, meetings).

Norms and Practices: Rules or behaviors guiding member interactions.

Connectivity: The level of engagement and interaction within the network.

Advantages of Viewing Connections as Information Networks:

Broader Perspective: Provides a unified framework to understand various networks — cultural, religious, educational, and professional.

Holistic Insight: Reveals how different networks intersect and shape our identities, choices, and behaviors.

Clarity in Decision-Making: Offers a structured way to evaluate which networks align with our goals and well-being.

Strategic Navigation: Encourages deliberate management of affiliations, guiding decisions about which networks to join, leave, or invest in.

Adaptability and Growth: Fosters openness to new networks that align with evolving interests and personal development.

Why Reevaluate Your Networks?

Conduct Regular Inventories: Evaluate the networks you are part of and consciously choose those that align with your evolving goals and values.

Reflect on Inherited Networks: Are they aligned with your current goals?

Strengthen Beneficial Chosen Networks: Deepen engagement or step back from those that no longer serve you.

Explore New Networks: Seek communities that align with your evolving interests and aspirations.

Reevaluate Your Role: Are you a passive observer or an active contributor within these networks?

Conclusion: Curate Your Networks with Intention

Think of managing your information networks like refining a filter: it helps you identify the common threads across your various connections, accelerating your learning and growth. By consciously choosing which networks to engage with, exit, or explore, you create a more purposeful path aligned with your values and goals. Just as a filter clarifies what matters, effectively managing your networks sharpens your vision for who you aim to become.

Take charge of your information networks today and ensure they reflect the best version of your evolving self.

Thanks for reading Faith, Family & Future! it, rather than simply inheriting it from family, culture, and society, is essential. This awareness can bring clarity and purpose, impacting not only your personal faith but also your professional success and overall life satisfaction. It's also important to find a balance and possibly combine elements of different approaches. Relying too heavily on a single approach could lead to negative outcomes, whereas a balanced combination can provide a more holistic and enriching faith experience.

Let's Reflect Together

The intent of this message is to drive awareness about the type of relationship we all carry subconsciously with God. It is important to consciously choose the relationship we want, rather than simply inheriting one from family, culture, and society. Reflect on your relationship with God and consider how it impacts your life and career. Embrace a relationship that brings you peace, fulfillment, and success.

If anyone in my community is working on their relationship with God and wants to delve deeper into this topic, feel free to reach out to me. I will be happy to share my journey and answer any questions. Let's learn together and support each other in our faith journeys.

(This post has been developed in partnership with AI, leveraging tools like ChatGPT for writing assistance and research to add better value to the reader.)

Thanks for reading Amit’s Substack! After a quick calculation (with a little help from my friend, ChatGPT), I realized that life, on average, gives us about 900 months. Yes, that's right—900 months. Not days, not weeks, but months. Suddenly, it all seemed so finite yet oddly manageable.

This epiphany led me to contemplate further. How many of these precious months have I already used? And how many do I have left? Spoiler alert: I've lived through 569 months already. That's right, 569 months filled with school, work, and enough questionable fashion choices to fill a warehouse. This leaves me with 331 months to go, assuming I hit the jackpot and make it to 75.

To gain more perspective, I wanted to break it down even further—how many months do we spend in each stage of our life? And how do our energy, resources, and capabilities shift through these stages? Here's what I found:

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

It's important to note that the exact number of years in each stage can vary by individual. Life's journey is unique for everyone, and these stages might stretch or compress depending on personal circumstances.

Additionally, the key constraints we need to deal with change in each stage of life. When you're young, you often have time and health but limited money. As you grow older, the constraints shift—you may have more financial resources, but less time and possibly declining health. These points may seem obvious upon reflection, yet many of us forget them as we navigate our individual journeys.

Conclusion

When you break it down, 900 months doesn't seem so small or overwhelming. It's a manageable chunk of time that we can plan for, stage by stage. So, whether you're just starting out or well into your journey, remember to make the most of each month. After all, we've got 900 of them to play with—let's make them count!

What's your take on this? How many months have you lived, and how many do you have left?
